TikTok guide

The next big thing that everyone is getting on board with? It’s TikTok.

In 2020 it was the most downloaded app in the world. The app only exists for a little over 4 years now, but in the course of 2020 became immensely popular, as the app reached 800 million active users across the globe.

TikTok is a social media platform that allows its users to create, share, and react to short video clips that last up to 60 seconds.

TikTok is best known for its popular dance routines, trending challenges, and lip-sync videos. But it offers so much more! On the platform, you can find educational information, quick and easy recipes, beauty tutorials, and more.

TikTok is just for kids and teens? Think again!
Although the app initially attracted a younger crowd,  everybody is taking a peek at this booming app. If you don’t want to be the last one hopping on the TikTok train, you can follow our TikTok guide 101 below.

TikTok step-by-step guide

Step 1: Download and explore the app

Start with downloading the application in the Apple AppStore or the Google Playstore.

When opening the app, you first get to see the “For You” page. This page reflects your personal preferences. The TikTok algorithm recommends video content based on what you like to watch. This forms a highly personalized feed just FOR YOU. To scroll through the content, you should swipe up. Now you can gaze endlessly through the video content that TikTok offers.

You can like, react, and even save the video content to share it on other social media platforms or with your friends directly. If you click on the music, you can save it for later to use yourself, and if you swipe to the left, you can see the profile of the creator whose video you’re watching. You can see their other videos, follow them, or check out their other social media accounts.

But to follow creators and to make and share your own video content you need to first set up your own account. Add a profile picture, link your other socials such as Instagram and YouTube, and introduce yourself briefly in your bio. Give some more information about yourself and the content you create.

Step 2: Create content

When you are done setting up a profile, you can start making your video. Tap the “Record video” button to start filming or upload previously shot content to make your video. To improve and change your video there are several tools in TikTok at your disposal. You can also choose music and audio fragments from the large TikTok library to accompany your video.

Step 3: Shoot your own video

Once you are done choosing the effects and playing with the tools you can start recording. You can choose to film a 15-second or a 60-second video. Start recording by clicking the record button.
There are several ways that you can record your video. You can either hold the record button and by releasing it, it shoots several segments. This means that you can stop filming and later pick up where you left.

You can also shoot hands-free by hitting the timer button on the screen. When you’ve selected the duration of the video and hit the record button, a timer starts counting down to the moment the video starts recording.

When you are satisfied with your content you can hit the right check button, and if you want to record again you hit the arrow next to it to start over.

Step 4: Edit your video

Once the video is recorded you can see the menu below that offers you fun effects to add to your content. You can for example make a fun transition by zooming in or set up your video in slow-motion, add sounds or music if you did not already do this in a previous step. You can also add stickers such as emojis, dates, gifs, or even a poll to ask your followers a question.
In the side menu, there are tools to add a filter to your video, adjust clips, add voice effects, voiceovers, trim, and volume. To perfect your video the way you want to.

Step 5: Post your TikTok

Now it’s time to share your video. But before you get it out there for everyone to see, add a caption that gives a description of the video. In the caption, you can also include hashtags. These hashtags increase your visibility on the platform and by adding trending ones you are more likely to show up on someone’s feed.

You tag friends or brands the same way you do on Instagram and regulate who can watch your videos by making it private, for friends only, or public.

Now you can hit the post button!

Optional step 6:  Share your TikTok on other socials

When you have made a fun TikTok video, you can also share it on other channels. It offers extra fun content on, for example, your Instagram reels and on the other hand, creates more traffic to your TikTok account so you can build your following.

By hitting the share button you can share it to every big social media channel or you can directly save the video to the camera roll of your phone.

So now you’ve learned all the basics to create your own fun video content on today’s hottest platform. Why should you miss out on the fun any longer?
